Flowers can be such a beautiful part of any wedding. They adorn empty areas of a room, add a beautiful touch to the center of your guest’s table and accent the bride and her gown. Key word here is accent! One thing that a bride does not want to do is to carry flowers so colorful and unique that you see a bouquet walking a bride down the aisle!

Flowers are an accessory and accessories add, they don’t take away from. Flowers should accent the bride, bridesmaids, grooms, the banquet hall, the fall wedding favors, etc. They shouldn’t be noticed, they should be complimentary and should help make the room feel warm and inviting. Therefore, be very careful with color schemes and types of flowers. And with a good florist, you won’t have to worry about many of the problems that can happen in this area of planning your wedding.

But, choosing a good florist can be a very tricky proposition. I know most people do not like to spend a lot of money on flowers, especially after spending money on bridal shower favors. After all, they are here one minute and gone the next, unless you decide to go with silk flowers, and I’ll get into that in a moment. Always shop for a florist early. The ones that are excellent and not costly will be booked very early. Asking friends and relatives who have gotten married recently for their thoughts on the florist they used is always a good place to start. Ask florists to see their books of arrangements and a list of clients who they’ve done weddings for. Also, ask them to see the assortment of favors used, especially the sophisticated wine wedding favors, which add class to any wedding flower arrangement. Most of all, you have to like your florist and feel comfortable working with them.

After you’ve decided on several florists, you should bring each of them the colors of your wedding party and some pictures that you’ve found of bouquets and centerpieces that you love. Be very clear in asking them if they are able to accomplish what you want and to give you a price for each item, not for the total wedding. Hopefully, this will decide for you who you want to work with.

One last decision is whether you’re going to use fresh, dried or silk flowers. Years ago, anything other than fresh flowers was a no no! Today, anything goes and real-looking silk flowers and unique kinds of dried flowers are becoming very popular, especially if the bride/groom or anyone in your wedding party is allergic to fresh flowers. In that case, you may want to opt for silk. But please, unless you don’t mind having flowers that look fake in person and in photographs, be very careful when picking silk flowers. Choose ones that have the look and feel of the real thing. Nice thing about silk, is that you can keep them forever.

Finally, please remember that this is your day. The last thing you want is to be upstaged by flowers. And it can happen very easily if attention isn’t given to coordinating the colors and textures of your flowers with you, the bride. Keep them subtle and they will be beautiful and compliment you whether you are walking down the aisle or dancing with your future mate. Remember, sometimes less is more.

If we could garden without any interference from the pests which attack plants, then indeed gardening would be astraightforward matter. But all of the time we must watch out for these small enemies tiny in size, but tremendous in the havoc they make.

How can one “fix up” for toads? Well, one thing to do is to prepare a retreat, quiet, dark and damp. A few stones of some size under the shade of ashrub with perhaps a carpeting of damp leaves, would appear extraordinarily fine to a toad.

There are two general classes of insects known by the way they do their work. One kind gnaws at the plant actually taking pieces of it into its system. This type of insect has a mouth fitted to do that work. Grasshoppers and caterpillars are of this sort. The other kind sucks the juices from a plant. This, in a lot of ways, is the worst sort. Plant lice belong here, as do mosquitoes, which prey on us. All of the scale insects fasten themselves on plants, and suck out the life of the plants.

Now can we fight these chaps? The chewing fellows might be caught with poison sprayed upon plants, which they take into their bodies with the plant. The Bordeaux mix which is a poison sprayed upon plants for this purpose.

In the other case the one thing is to attack the insect direct. So certain pesticides, as they’re called, are sprayed on the plant to fall upon the insect. They do alethal work of attacking, in one way or another, the body of the insect.

Sometimes we are much uneasy with underground insects at work. You have seen a garden covered with ant hills. Hereis a remedy, but one of which you have to be careful.

This question is constantly being asked, ‘How can I tell what insect is doing the destructive work?’ Well, you can tell partly by the work done, and partly by seeing the insect itself. This latter thing is not necessarily so easy to do. I had cutworms one season and never saw one. I saw only the work done. If stalks of tender plants are cut clean off be pretty sure the cutworm is abroad. What does he look like? Well, that’s a hard question because his folks is an enormous one.

Should you see sometime a grayish striped caterpillar, you will know itis a cutworm. But due to its habit of resting in the ground in the day and working by night, it is tough to catch sight of one. The cutworm is around early in the season prepared to cut the flower stalks of the hyacinths. When the peas come on a bit later, heis prepared for them. Then there are the slugs, which are garden pests. The slug will devour nearly any garden plant, whether it be a flower or a vegetable. They lay tons of eggs in old rubbish heaps. Do you see the good of cleaning up rubbish? The slugs do more harm in the garden than nearly any other single insect pest. You can discover them in the following way. There is a trick for bringing them to the outer surface of the ground in the day time. You see they rest in the day below ground. So just water the soil in which the slugs are meant to be. How are you to grasp where they are? They’re quite certain to hide near the plants they’re feeding on. So water the ground with some nice clean lime water. This will bug them, and up they will poke to see what the matter is.

Hopefully you’ve read Bridal Bible Part 1, which is the beginnings of planning your wedding. If not, no worries. This is Part 2, with or without the first installment will give you direction, and help put your mind at ease as well as give you some good ideas for unique wedding favors.

Bridal Shower – You have to decide where the Bridal Shower will be and who is going to pay for this? In some areas of the country, it is customary for the girls in the bridal party to pay for the shower, in other areas, it’s the groom’s mom and in some parts, it is given by the bride’s mother. Also, the Bridal Shower normally is held 4-8 weeks before the wedding and don’t forget to add to your list some cute bridal shower favors.

Select the photographer/videographer – Be very careful here! This is what you will be looking at for many years to come. Check out many photographers and look at their work. Ask him for a couple of references and if you feel to, call them. Again, the best way to avoid any wedding vendor disaster, is word of mouth.

Flowers – Flowers are gorgeous at a wedding, but be careful. This can easily put your budget into the red. Decide what kinds of flowers the bride will hold and what the bridal party will carry. Again, if you want to stay in budget, a single rose is very elegant. If budget isn’t an issue, then go for it! Skies the limit! But remember, references are very important for this also. Once you walk into the reception and the flowers are on the table, you’re stuck with them! But if you add candles to your flowers at the reception as well as some great candle wedding favors, it would look amazing.

Limos – You have to decide if you will be driven to the ceremony and reception by a limousine service or will family/friends drive you. Also, if you go for limos, do you also want one for the bridal party and parents? Decisions decisions decisions… Again, this adds dollars to your budget. If you’re being cautious, have a friend or family member with a really nice car escort you.

Wedding Cake – Find a banquet hall that includes the cake at no extra charge. Many of them do. They’ll just want to know the colors you want on it. Some places allow you to pick from photos of different cakes. There are also upgrades. Be careful with your spending! When you’re looking at the gorgeous cakes, you’ll say, “But it’s only another $100.” Remember, $100 here, $100 there; it all adds up quickly!

Reception Music – Band or D.J. – totally your preference and pocketbook. Bands are generally more expensive, but some people wouldn’t consider anything but a live band. Others could care less. But if you are considering a band, go to wedding band sampler nights. And then speak to the group after. Ask them if they can play your “wedding song” (yes,you have to pick that!) and other types of music that you like. And of course, ask them their price and if they expect to be fed. I know that’s tough to ask, but with prices per person anywhere from $40-300 a head, you better know if they expect that or not.

Honeymoon – Ah…finally…some peace and quiet! Well, perhaps, if you’ve decided to go to a desert island. Be very careful when booking this. Get recommendations from your friends and family. This beautiful event can turn into a nightmare without the right planning.

Mark all of these in your wedding book, each on its own page. Keep a log of every vendor, their prices and any information they gave you that is important. Use this as a guideline. It will make your life easier, and you may actually enjoy your own wedding! Congratulations!

So, once you get that tree home it’s planting time. But is it really as easy as digging a hole in the ground and plopping your new purchase in? Yes, it can be that easy. fter all, trees are an investment in your local ecosystem and ultimately the world.

When trees are stored in a nursery for long periods of time, it becomes necessary to re-burlap them, as the burlap could rot before the tree is sold. If it has been re-wrapped, then there is a possibility that nylon strings are between the layers of burlap; so check the tree and stem carefully before tree planting. Just as long as the nylon string is removed from around the stem of the tree, it should do just fine.

A very critical part of planting a tree is the soil in which you plant it. If your soil is heavy clay, then it is ideal to add rich topsoil to the mix when planting. If for some reason you can’t do that, then bury the plant so that at least 2 inches or more of the root ball is above the existing grade.

Do keep in mind that trees planted this way can dry out. But, planting them flush to the ground in heavy clay can mean that the roots will get too much water.

Keep in mind that most trees are grown in well drained soil. That means that the soil around the root ball is porous so that water can easily pass through. It is recommended that you plant the root ball at least 2 inches above grade and backfill around the ball with the soil you shoveled out when you dug the hole.

Backfilling using clay soil is almost like building a dam to keep the excess water from over-saturating the root ball of your newly planted tree.

By tree planting in a good, nutrient-rich topsoil, you are doing all you can to keep your deciduous or coniferous plant healthy and happy. Whether you have good soil or bad, be careful not to plant your trees too deeply.
